On January 30 and 31 we attended a big two-day workshop where we had a further opportunity to deepen our knowledge of Taoist Tai Chi® arts. The workshop was enjoyed also by some members who were quite new to Taoist Tai Chi® and who have participated for the first time in an international workshop.  Here are impressions of my first international workshop.

Even if I am a complete newcomer to tai chi, having just finished the four-month course for beginners and not having had a chance to put together the 108 moves of the set when practising alone, I have decided that I would attend the two-day international workshop held in late January in Prague.

What I was expecting from that was to learn more about the context of tai chi and I was looking forward to the atmosphere of this international event, to the many dedicated people who are practising this art for a long time.  I was also curious about the foreign instructor, who was this time Jim Nicholson from Canada.

For me the workshop began on Thursday, two days before the official start. At our Prague clubhouse I was involved in cooking potato soup and baking gingerbread for guests staying there. In the evening there was  a three-hour intensive led by Jim Nicholson. For the first time I practiced the toryu, the donyu and other exercises that are not taught in the beginner classes.  I was deeply impressed by the quiet and relaxed tai chi Jim offered us. And he seemed to deeply enjoy our potato soup.

Participants came in huge numbers to the workshop which was held on the premises of a secondary school. Later I found out that we were about 260 from about nine countries. On both days we practiced intensely, both collectively and in small groups led by instructors from various countries. I met new members and new instructors. Sunday’s program began with chanting, another thing which was entirely new to me. We all received a yellow songbook with texts written in Chinese characters with transliteration into Latin characters. We chanted kneeling or standing under Jim‘s leadership. He masterfully chanted selected parts of the songbook; his performance was amazing.

I am so glad that I took part in the workshop. It’s always better to be “in it”, to see with your own eyes and to try new skills, rather than to just read about the effects of tai chi. It made me understand a little more what tai chi is about and it strengthened my motivation to keep going. It is clear to me that I’m at the beginning of a very long, perhaps infinite journey, but that it’s meaningful and that it strongly effects not only one’s health but also one’s spiritual and social spheres.
