The Dragon's Head Blog: Fung Loy Kok Day in Costa Rica

Last Sunday 24 participants gathered at the club to share a day of chanting, meditation, tai chi sets, cleaning our home, preparing food and sharing together. It was an opportunity to experience the benefits of the integrated training in the Taoist Tai Chi® arts Master Moy brought us.  We explored chanting, both standing and kneeling, Taoist and Confucian chants and their translations. We chanted together for the President’s mother who died 49 days before. We became more aware of the importance of being present and mindful, aware of each other and being harmonious and respectful in all the activities we share. By returning to 4 or 17 moves between the different chants, standing posture and walking quietly, we could better experience their effects on our movements in the set and deepen our appreciation and understanding of the profundity of the Taoist Tai Chi® arts.

I came in with a very scientific and rational mindset. Once I started to relax my mind I could feel more of my body, especially my arms and hands where I could feel a very nice warmth passing through.

When I came in I had discomfort in my back and legs. My back got aligned and even though I was scared of kneeling while we were chanting I could feel much relief in my legs. I could also feel heat in my neck and a lot of stillness.
I was very relaxed, peaceful, as if I were in a temple.

When we started the first chant I could feel the beautiful voice of one of the participants that was very close to me as it passed through. It was so intense and went through my abdomen, followed by heat. Tears of joy and happiness arose immediately.

The standing meditation allowed me to identify fears that live within me — but they are not my own. As I was able to get centered and still, I could let them go. That’s when I could feel a lot of expansion.

As I started the meditation I felt a lot of tension on my right side; it was like a spasm. After spending a little time in the posture I could relax and actually didn’t focus on my body anymore.  After the last part of the chanting we did the first four movements of the set. When we were doing those movements I felt empty of all negativity and full of positive energy and peace.

For me it is equally important to practice the chanting as it is to practice the movements (of the set). I feel a great joy. And every time I experience different things: heat, emotions, even tears… but it’s all part of our journey. The relaxation, the opening of mind, body and heart.
Chanting is special because it heals our most profound health challenges, both emotionally and spiritually. It improves our circulation. It’s amazing everything that we can experience by chanting!  It is a gift that we all deserve to receive. I wish all could.

The day unfolded in a way that I could feel the connections between the tai chi movements, the chanting and meditation. It was so clear to me that they are all parts of the same vast and precious whole in the process of rediscovering balance on many levels.  It allowed me to experience the movements again, in a new way, and gave stillness and peace to my day, which lasted long after I got back home.  At the same time it was a learning process; about how we do things and the need to be present and work together while respecting the teacher and the teachings.  I feel very grateful for being able to chant together for my mother who passed away 49 days ago. It was a profound healing experience.
