The Dragon's Head Blog: Elvelangs

What is “Elvelangs” (along the river)?

Every last Thursday evening of the year near the autumn equinox the electric lighting next to Akerselva (Akers River) is replaced by 4000 torches. There are about a hundred cultural groups who participate in this event, like beads on a string along Akerselva. There is live music, lighting and installations. A magical mood is crafted … and it’s free! The audience invites you to take a moody walk along the river where you will experience different cultural events along the way in the form of lights, dance and tones, from professionals and amateurs.

The autumn equinox symbolism, linked to nature’s cycle through light and dark, gives inspiration to artistic themes. Program listings take into account the river and the surroundings through forest areas, hills, plains and more urbanized areas.

We from the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Norway have been contributing to this annual event by displaying our lanterns, torches, and banners with small bonfires.  The group showed the complete set of moves and the first 17 moves, as well as the foundation exercises.  At the same time other members spoke to the public and distributed campaign visit cards.  This year, the group of was lead by Mette and Åse together with our new instructor (Tove).
